Child’s Hoody & Mitty Set

 Ski hood circumference 16½” at face opening and is sized to fit 4 year-old child.

Mittens measure 6½” long and 5” hand circumference.

Hat and Mittens are made in 2 colors of your choice.

Materials: 3.25mm (US 3) and 3.50mm (US 4) straight and circular knitting needles, stitch markers, stitch holders, yarn needle, 3 – 5/8” buttons to match your yarn.

1,020 yds of light weight yarn in two colors of your choice. 680 yds in one color-340 yds in other color. Make sure you get the gauge below.

GAUGE:24 sts = 4” [10 cm]; 32 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st with larger needles.

CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

 

SPECIAL STITCHES

SSK (slip, slip, knit) = Slip next two sts knitwise to the right needle, insert point of left needle through front of sts, knit these sts together.

M1= Make 1 (Inc) — Lift strand between needles to left-hand needle and knit strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole.

M1 Purlwise= Lift strand between needles to left-hand needle and purl strand through the front loop, twisting it to prevent a hole.

PATTERN STITCH

1×1 Rib

Row 1 (right side):*K1, P1; repeat from * across row.

Row 2: Knit the knit sts, Purl the purl sts.

Repeat rows 1-2 for rib pattern.

 

SKI HOOD

Face Opening

With smaller straight needles, cast on 100 sts.

Rows 1-2:Work 1×1 Rib.

Row 3 (Buttonhole Row):Work 2 sts in 1×1 Rib, K2tog, work to end of row in 1×1 Rib— 99 sts.

Note: Buttonhole placement is written for girl. Place on opposite side for boy.

Row 4: Work 1×1 Rib to last 2 sts, M1, work last 2 sts in 1×1 Rib—100 sts.

Rows 5-8:Work in 1×1 Rib for 1”.

Hood Body

Change colors and larger straight needles.

Work in St st until piece measures 8½” from cast on edge, then begin decrease rows as

follows:

Row 1 (right side decrease row):SSK, place marker, knit across row to last 2 sts, place marker, K2tog—98 sts.

Note: Leave markers in place; do not move to next row. This marks where to stitch the seam closed.

Row 2 (wrong side): Purl across.

Row 3 (right side decrease row):SSK, knit across row to last 2 sts, K2tog—96 sts.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until only 1 st remains on needles. Cut yarn, leaving an 18” long tail. With yarn needle and using mattress stitch, sew decrease seam together from st markers to tip of hood.

Rib Neck Edge

With right side facing, using circular needle, pick up and knit 124 sts along St

st section (above rib) of lower edge. Work in 1×1 Rib for 1”. At the same

time, measure down 1” from first buttonhole and make another buttonhole by repeating Row 3 of Face Opening. Repeat once more until you have a total of 3 buttonholes (one buttonhole on the Face Opening and two buttonholes on the Rib Neck Edge).

Next Row (right side increase row): Work in 1×1 Rib for 13 sts, M1 purlwise, (Rib 14 sts, M1 purlwise) 7 times, Rib 13 sts–132 sts. Continue in Rib pattern, working increase sts in purl until Rib Neck Edge measures 3”. Bind off all sts in Rib pattern.

FINISHING

Weave in all loose ends. Sew buttons onto hood opposite buttonholes. Make a 1” Pompom and sew to tip of hood.

MITTENS (make 2)

Cuff

With smaller straight needles, cast on 33 sts.

Rows 1-2: With A, *K1, P1; repeat from * to end of row.

Rows 3-4: With B, *K1, P1; repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat Rows1-4 three times. You should have

16 rows and piece should measure 2” from cast on edge

.

Hand

Change to larger straight needles and another color.

Row 1 (right side):K16, M1, knit to end of row—34 sts.

Row 2 (wrong side): Purl across.

Continue working in St st for 4 more rows.

Piece should measure ½”. Repeat Row 2 once more.

Thumb Gussett

Row 1 (right side):K16, place marker, M1, K1, M1, place marker, knit to end of row—36 sts.

Row 2 (wrong side): Purl across.

Row 3: Knit to first marker, slip marker, M1, knit to last st before next marker, M1, slip

marker, knit to end of row—38 sts.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until there are 9 sts between markers, then repeat Row 2 once

more—42 sts

Thumb

Row 1 (right side): K16 sts and place on st holder. K9 thumb sts and place remaining 17

sts on a second st holder.

Row 2 (wrong side): Purl across thumb sts—9 sts.

Row 3: Knit across thumb sts.

Repeat Rows 2-3 until thumb measures 1”.

Next Row: Purl across.

Next Row: K2tog across row to last st, K1.

Cut yarn, leaving a 12” tail.

Thread tail through yarn needle and through remaining sts on needle. Gather sts tightly and sew thumb seam closed.

HAND AND SHAPE MITTEN TOP

Pick up and knit sts from first st holder. Pick up and K3 sts from base of thumb, then knit sts from second st holder—36 sts. Work even St st until Hand measures 4” from cuff, ending with a purl row.

Next Row: K2, K2tog across—19 sts.

Next Row: P across.

Next Row: K1, K2tog across—10 sts.

Next Row: Purl across.

Next Row: K2tog across—5 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving an 18” (45.72 cm) tail. Thread tail through yarn needle and through

remaining sts. Pull tightly and secure.

 

FINISHING

Fold mittens in half and lay flat. Using 18” tail and yarn needle, begin at the tip of fingers and work down to wrist using mattress st, to join seams. Make two 1” pompoms and attach to wrist of mittens on the opposite side of the thumb. Weave in all loose ends.
